Welcome to the web site of Howden Women’s Institute.
Why not become involved in our Community?
We had a very well attended meeting for our AGM on 14th November. The committee for 2023/24 was confirmed and I had the privilege of being elected as President of Howden WI for this year. I am honoured to be part of this group and that the members have entrusted me to carry it forward next year.
Heartfelt thanks must go to our retiring President, Pat Hickman, who was President for five years and has expertly steered our members through some difficult times; keeping spirits up and making sure everyone was ok during the Covid lockdowns. Because of Pat and Christine we have a happy, thriving group in Howden
Christmas 2023 is coming up fast and we know how to celebrate in WI. We start December with a trip to see the Reads Warblers Christmas Concert at the Junction in Goole, supporting local talent and getting us in the Christmas spirit for the festive season.
We will have a stall at the Christmas Market in Howden Minster on 7th December, selling homemade cakes and goodies, some Christmas crafts and our Christmas Cookbook, which has many delicious tried and tested recipes from our members. Please come and see us from 4.00pm.
Our members meeting is on Tuesday 12th December from 7.15pm in the Methodist Church hall when we will be partying! We expect a visit from Father Christmas. Members have been asked to bring a ‘Secret Santa’ gift up to the value of £5 and Santa will be distributing these during the party.
Finally, on Monday 18th December we will be enjoying our Christmas Dinner at Bishops Bar.
We would be delighted to welcome you to our group. The regular monthly meeting is on the second Tuesday of each month. There are also smaller groups that meet up throughout the month.
Please see our Web Page https://howdenwi.co.uk for further information, or contact me for a chat if you are interested in joining us. The first two meetings you attend would be on a trial basis before you join.

Today’s Women’s Institute
The National Movement has moved a long way from ‘Jam & Jerusalem’. Not that these were ever bad things to focus the movement on. A modern woman lives in a very fast-moving world, probably does not have time to make jam (which I have to say is quite tricky to get just right), and probably only thinks of Jerusalem at Easter.
Being ‘relevant‘ is all when it comes to creating a modern women’s movement, (though we are very proud of our past). ‘Belonging’ is such a need these days. So many people seem preoccupied, wrapped up, insulated and isolated in a ‘bubble’ of virtual everything. Just seeing and talking to a real friendly face can be so uplifting, so comforting and so very reassuring, (it’s so nice to not feel alone). It’s all about ‘fraternity‘, ‘equality‘ and fair-mindedness. We aim to be a women’s group that you will be proud to be part of.
We aim to be a caring ‘family’ to our members and listen/be there and support them in whatever way we can because life is not all champagne & strawberries. Life has its highest highs and also its irksome depths. Sharing the good and the bad is the way to face life head-on and experience it all.
